The Lob Wedge Club

The lob wedge is a club of fairly recent origin introduced as golfers Ping lob wedgedemand more and more from their golf clubs.

Wedges are the most lofted of golf clubs and the lob wedge was the most lofted club of the golf wedges. This no longer holds true as the 'X wedge' is even more lofted having degrees into the late sixties. A 68 degree wedge is no longer an oddity.

The lob wedge club will have a face loft of between 58 to 64 degrees. This is the angle from vertical that the club face lies back. The reason for the lob wedge is to get the golf ball airborne in a steep trajectory giving a high shot which due to the sharp descent angle will land and have very little roll.

The lob wedge is the perfect club for getting over sand traps, trees or bushes which may lie in your path to the green. It allows you to avoid trouble without running the risk of rolling off the green. Having said that the lob wedge shot is probably one of the riskier shots in golf and you should practice it regularly to avoid mishaps.

Golf wedges have another facet to consider which is especially important when choosing a lob wedge club and that is the 'bounce' of the club. The bounce is a mixture of sole design, club face and loft. Bounce is expressed in degrees. To decide on which bounce is right for your lob wedge club you must consider your personal golf swing.

Every golfer has a different swing.just have they have different bodies. This affects the lob wedge club buying descision as a steep, sharply descending swing will require you to have a higher bounce degree whilst a wide shallow swing needs a lower bounce. Titleist have a very descriptive name for this, they divide golfers between 'diggers' and 'sliders'.

The overall effect of the bounce on a lob wedge club is that the trailing edge of the club will lift the leading edge off he ground. If you are a slider with a shallow swing then you could hit the dreaded blade shot where the ball flies across the green or conversely if you are a digger a low bounce club will 'dig' in to the ground leaving you with a 'duff'.

One last point which is worth mentioning before you rush to buy a lob wedge club is the conditions on the course where you regularly play. If the golf course is generally firm, dry tight lies then a low bounce is needed but if you play where the fairways are softer then consider a high bounce which will prevent the lob wedge from digging in too far.
