Featured club; Titleist Vokey Spinned Mill Wedge
The classic tear drop head, the CNC grooved face and the legend that is Vokey writ large on the sole. All these things tell you have a wedge of purity in your hands. The Vokey designed spin milled golf wedge.Bob Vokey is the man behind the name and his passion is for wedges. He is sought out by major league professionals for his abilities to design rock solid performance into his wedges. Bob says,
"Tour players are very picky-and precise. So I've taken their suggestions, and do what I call 'tweaking' to get their wedges to where they want them to be. Along the way, I've picked up some tips to make wedges for everyday players that are very useful in their games too."
Bob looks primarily at bounce angle, defined as the as the distance between the leading and trailing edges of the sole, it is this angle that gives the wedge its' ability to glide through the turf or sand with the slightly lower trailing edge keeping the front edge raised to prevent digging in. The angle is important to the clubs playability as a higher bounce angle will drive through soft turf or sand rising out quickly to launch the ball whilst on firmer ground you will need a lower bounce angle.
A high bounce angle with its higher leading edge used on firm ground runs the risk of sculling the ball, sending it shooting across the ground at a rate of knots. This is a bad thing and can easily be blamed on a poor shot by the player when in fact it's just that the bounce angle is wrong for the conditions. Finally something that is not your fault! Hooray!
The options in the Titleist Vokey designed range are the 200, the 300 and the 400 series. Bob says the 200 range is his under forty club and the 300 and 400 are for the over forties.
The clubs are numbered like so; 258.12 for example is a 200 range club with 58 degrees of loft and a bounce angle of 12 degrees. A higher bounce angle is probably more suitable to the mid to high handicapper as they tend to have a steeper attack angle in their swing whereas a lower handicapper will have a slightly shallower downward swing so he doesn't need the increased bounce. The new spinned mill wedges are numbered similarly with SM preceding the numbers, i.e. SM58.12
